For centuries botanists have debated the origins of the Hippeastrum and Amaryllis, the name of the latter having become commonly used (incorrectly so) to describe both species. The winter flowering Hippeastrum is from South America unlike the Amaryllis which originates from South Africa.

In this example, the creamy white petals combine with a pale green throat to produce a palette that will soothe the soul.
