The Gloxinia is a native of Central and South America and is particularly common around the more humid and shady regions of the Andes. Gloxinias are characterised by their colourful and extravagant tubular shaped blooms. These blooms come in a number of colours ranging from purple and blue through crimson and pink to pure white. Many varieties are two-toned.

In this example, the centre is surrounded by purple ruffled petals that serve to form a velvet cloak.
