The Dawn Redwood is a native of the Lichuan and Hubei provinces of China. Now prevalent throughout the Northern Hemisphere, the Dawn Redwood also grows extensively in the US, East of the Mississippi. Smaller than its larger redwood cousins, the Dawn Redwood can still grow to a height in excess of fifty metres.

In this example the reddish-brown scales are woody and open having released the seeds they once protected. The cone is small - a little more than half an inch wide and three quarters of an inch long. Named Eternity, the pine cone has long been a symbol of fertility, renewal, and immortality.
